Landing your first job after graduation or NYSC can feel like climbing Aso Rock – exciting, challenging, and a little scary (at least that’s what I imagine, I’ve never tried to climb it)! Job interviews are a big part of your career climb, and with little to no work experience, it can feel like the most daunting task ever.
Dear recent graduate and entry-level professional, if you are clueless about how to introduce yourself in a job interview or how to sell yourself, fear not, this piece will guide you in confidently acing those interview questions and landing your dream job.
Understanding the Job Interview Process
A job interview is a formal conversation between a job seeker and a potential employer. It serves as an opportunity for the employer to assess if the candidate is a good fit for the job and the organization. On the other hand, it allows the job seeker to understand the job requirements, and the company culture, and evaluate if the organization aligns with their long-term career goals.
Securing a job interview is an achievement. It means you’ve successfully passed the initial screening process, and you should be proud of yourself for getting that far! Now, patewo for yourself, will you? 👏🏼
Even with that, the journey from application to job offer can seem dreadful, especially for those new to the corporate world.
How to Prepare for a Job Interview
The key to navigating the entire process successfully is PREPARATION. With the right preparation, you can turn this seemingly wahalurd process into an opportunity to showcase your skills, abilities, and potential. Here are steps to help you get ready for your big day!
1. Own the Virtual Interviews
In a world that’s mostly digital, interviewers now “delve” (if you know, you know) more into online interviews, where you’re usually required to turn on your camera. You need to ensure you have a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background. Check that your internet connection and power supply are hitch-free. Test your camera and microphone beforehand and maintain eye contact with the interviewer by looking into the camera. Don’t forget to flash your pearly whites occasionally. 😁 The fact that it’s online doesn’t take punctuality out of the equation, so please remember to join in at least 15 minutes before the set time.
2. Research the Company
Before stepping into the interview room, you must gather as much information as possible about the company. This will show the interviewer that you’re genuinely interested in the company and the position. Here’s how you can go about it:
- Visit the company’s website to understand its mission, values, products, or services.
- Check the company’s social media profiles to get a sense of its culture and recent updates.
- Read news articles about the company to stay informed about its latest achievements and future goals.
- Go through online reviews to get an insight into the company’s work environment and employee satisfaction.
3. Attend Job Conferences/Events
One invaluable step in preparing for a job interview is attending a job conference or event. These gatherings provide a unique opportunity for job seekers to gain insights from experienced recruiters and industry professionals, discover the latest trends across industries, and even participate in mock interviews or workshops designed to sharpen their interview skills.

4. What to Wear to a Job Interview
You know how they say, “Dress the way you want to be addressed”? This is especially key during interviews. Your appearance creates the first impression, so it’s important to dress appropriately. Here are a few tips from a fashionista: 😋
- Avoid casual attire like jeans, flip-flops, or hoodies (really, who’d dress like this, though? 🙄) Opt for business casual or formal attire, depending on the company culture.
- Stick to neutral colors like black, white, grey, or navy. These colors project a professional image.
- Ensure your clothes are clean, ironed, and well-fitting. Use a good but not strong perfume.
- Keep your accessories minimal and avoid flashy jewellery.
- Your interview is not the time to show off your overly dyed hair. Keep your hairstyle moderate and neat.
- For video interviews, focus on your top half. However, don’t neglect the bottom half entirely – you never know if/when you might need to stand up abruptly. Let’s try and avoid “I can explain” situations, please. 🙈 😂
5. Practice Common Interview Questions
Practicing common interview questions can help you articulate your thoughts better during the actual interview. These are questions that you can practice:
- Tell me about yourself.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Why do you want this position?
- Why should the company hire you?
Remember, the idea is not to memorize the answers but to have a clear thought process ready for each question.
Acing a job interview is not an easy task, I know, especially if you’re new to the job market. However, with the right preparation, you can turn this challenging process into an opportunity to learn, grow, and kick-start the career of your dreams. Irrespective of the interview outcome, take it as an opportunity to improve and move one step closer to becoming your best self. Best of luck with your next job interview!
